Today, a little better rested after our first night in Rome, we traveled across the city by metro ("When in Rome, do as the Romans do!") to another country... the Vatican.
We met our guide, Nicoletta again, then entered the Vatican Museums, a huge complex displaying some of the countless artistic treasures in the Vatican's collection. Focusing on just a small number of highlights, the tour continued to the legendary Sistine Chapel, always a highlight of any visit to Rome.
Finally Nico introduced the group to St. Peter's Basilica, the largest & possibly grandest church in the world & the home of the Catholic Church.

After the morning tour of the Vatican the rest of the day was free for everyone to explore Rome at leisure - whether to shop, sightsee or maybe just begin with a leisurely lunch.
Later we all rendezvoused at the Victor Emmanuel monument to go for dinner, stopping first to briefly visit the Pantheon, the best preserved ancient Roman building in Rome.
After a great dinner in a locally-owned trattoria, close to the Pantheon, we walked through the 'Centro Storico' (historic center) to nearby Giolitti's, possibly the best gelato in Rome which was our dessert.
Enjoying our gelato on the way we next continued our nighttime walk through Rome, stopping to see the Trevi Fountain on our way home.
